Synopsis

"As it had done every day for a hundred years, the rising sun slipped through a tiny opening in the side of the mountain and illuminated the face of a dead man."

So begins The Millennium Man, a novel by W. Joseph Wyatt. "It's a story about the turn of the new century, an opportunity to pause and take stock by imagining how our world would be seen by someone from the past, in this case Renaissance man Leonardo da Vinci," Wyatt said.

The book is set in small town West Virginia. And how was da Vinci transported across time and space to West Virginia? "That is a bit of science fiction, a device to get the impossible accomplished in order to make the novel interesting," Wyatt added.

More important, according to the author, are the advances that da Vinci discovers. Advances in culture, communication, medicine and more abound. But with them is a disturbing dark side. Leonardo is surprised at the ease with which many people suspend their critical thinking and instead embrace the occult, astrology, psychic hotlines and mentalistic explanations of their own actions, all in misguided efforts to find answers to life's questions. In The Millennium Man Leonardo foresees a solution to the dilemma in the science of behavior analysis.

"The book appeals on several levels," Wyatt pointed out. Older people will enjoy the way it looks back at the twentieth century. But it can be enjoyed by those as young as age 14. "College professors have adopted the book because it presents the emerging field of behavior analysis in a positive light. High school and middle school teachers use the novel because it integrates fields such as literature, history, art, and the sciences, and because it serves to sharpen students' critical thinking skills."
